OPERATIONAL RELEVANCE

Supports combat casualty care, surgical readiness, and advanced procedural innovation through hands-on, preclinical large-animal research. Enables validation and refinement of interventional technologies before clinical use—meeting readiness, training, and development needs of military medical personnel and federal research partners.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Stonewall Research Facility (SRF) is a 3,500 square foot translational hub rated BSL 2, following CDC/NIH biosafety level standards. SRF is well-suited for infectious disease and immunology research involving moderate-risk agents, supported by required biosafety cabinets, specialized PPE requirements, controlled laboratory access, and trained staff. The facility is designed for large animal model studies and supports training, procedural validation, and new surgical technologies in areas such as trauma, hemorrhage control, and complex surgery.

TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

  • Fully equipped surgical and procedural suites with prep, recovery, and monitoring
  • On-site advanced imaging including CT, ultrasound, and digital radiography
  • Integrated clinical chemistry lab for diagnostic workflows
  • BSL-2 lab access supports infection control and biosafety protocols
  • Infrastructure for trauma and device testing using large-animal models
  • Strategic location near LSUHS and Shreveport Regional Airport

KEY ADVANTAGES

  • Realistic preclinical testing environments not available in rodent models
  • Streamlined access to surgeons, researchers, and clinical faculty
  • Supports training sustainment, technology refinement, and surgical simulation
  • Federal regulatory alignment; pursuing AAALAC accreditation
  • Open to joint use for military, academic, and commercial partners

USE SCENARIOS

  • Combat casualty care simulation and training
  • Surgical tool and medical device testing
  • Infectious disease and antimicrobial efficacy research
  • Federal contractor support for DoD R&D
  • Trauma-focused translational medicine studies
