ANIMAL METABOLIC CORE | Research Core

We are excited to announce the establishment of the new Animal Metabolic Core housing a Prmethion Core Cab-16 environmental control cabinet and a Bruker LF50 BCA whole body composition analyzer.

Promethion Core Cab-16 and Metabolic Cages

The Promethion Core Cab-16 is an environmental control cabinet capable of holding up to 16 metabolic cages for the purpose of delivering second-by-second behavioral and metabolic measurements with the highest data granularity. The Promethion Core metabolic cages allow for the measurement of body weight, food and water intake, energy expenditure (VO2max), and the Cab-16 unit that houses the metabolic cages allows for the control of nearly all cage variables for the entirety of the experiment, including temperature of the cage, accessibility to food, water, and the running wheel. The Promethion Live software utilized will provide comprehensive reports on the mice while they are housed in the cabinets. The metabolic cages and cabinets also possess the feature of isotope tracing which allows for tracking the movement of labeled atoms through a chemical reaction.

Features

  • Food and water intake
  • Energy expenditure/Indirect calorimetry
  • Running Capacity
  • Temperature controlled studies: Thermoneutrality and Cold Exposure
  • Metabolism and Behavior Data
  • Urine Collection
  • Carbon and Oxygen Isotope Tracing

Bruker LF50 BCA Analyzer

The Bruker LF50 BCA Analyzer utilizes Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR) to provide a precise measurement of lean tissue, fat, and fluid in living mice. A notable advantage of using the LF50 is that the animal is able to be carefully analyzed without the necessity for any anesthetics or procedures.

Features

  • Analyzes mice up to 60 g
  • Analysis of the lean tissue, fat, and fluid composition of the mouse
  • Economical procedures: no consumables, retain expensive lab animals for entire study
  • Rapid analysis: measurement takes less than 2 minutes, no sample preparation
  • Reduced animal stress: no need for anesthetics; animals are measured “as-is”
  • Allows more frequent testing, due to reduction of risks to animal health
